How to Use It
  1. Knot or cord magic can be used as sympathetic magic. So you used the cord to bind two things together that represent the people, items, or situations in real life, like tying two dolls together that represent two people. (Like binding the picture of Nancy in the Craft.) The cords can be used on their own as well, like using a black cord to represent yourself, and a green cord to represent a job you’re trying to keep. This is the idea behind handfastings.

  2. Can also be used to un-bind things. If you’re feeling stuck to someone or something, and you feel like you can’t get away. Tie a very tight knot in a thin piece of string. You want it to be very difficult to unravel, because the emotions tied up in this are also very difficult to unravel. Then, untie the string. You have to put in the effort to get yourself untangled. Ideally, pick a color cord to match the problem.

  3. Meditational witches ladders - One example of a modern witch's ladder is a string of 40 beads or a cord with 40 knots. They are tied specifically to assist in trance work, often in relation to a deity. Usually requires a lot of planning, and are taught to you by someone else. They tend to mark an initiation, and then the knots serve as ‘guideposts’ to getting back to that same gnosis point.
  4. Often worn as markers to show what levels or ceremonies we’ve gone through, but that only makes sense to others in your coven.
  5. Some are similar to a rosary, where the knots are used to count during chants and meditation, so the witch doesn’t lose her place.

  6. Spellcrafting - tie knots into a cord (usually 3 or 9), that are wishes, curses, or blessings. Even protections. Even friendship bracelets are a form of this. It’s pretty simple - a cord is used and a knot is tied or untied. Everything else is up to you, like type of cord, color, charms, etc. The knot is the container of the intention, it’s storing the energy. When you untie it, you’re releasing the intention into the universe or just breaking the spell, which makes it one of the easiest types of spells to end.
  7. Many witches make these out of natural materials to hang in the garden, where they will slowly fall apart naturally and return to the earth.

  8. Chant often used:
By knot of one, the spell’s begun.
By knot of two, the magic comes true.
By knot of three, so it shall be.
By knot of four, this power is stored.
By knot of five, my will shall drive.
By knot of six, the spell I fix.
By knot of seven, the future I leaven.
By knot of eight, my will be fate.
By knot of nine, what is done is mine.
